Micro weddings are redefining the way we celebrate marriage. These intimate gatherings, with their small guest lists and personal touches, offer a refreshing departure from the grandiose affairs of the past.
As more couples prioritise meaningful and budget-friendly alternatives, micro-weddings have emerged as a popular trend, particularly resonating this year with the financial pressures many are experiencing.
The Rise of Micro Weddings - what are they and why are they popular?
Micro weddings typically include fewer than 50 guests. Despite their smaller size, they create the same level of significance and emotion as larger weddings - sometimes even more so.
Why? At bigger weddings, couples are often in a rush to interact with everyone who comes. It becomes less about them and their experience. Micro weddings provide an ideal platform to create memorable experiences that reflect a couple's personalities and values, and connect meaningfully with their guests.
The Benefits of Micro Weddings
Intimacy and Connection
With a limited guest list, you can genuinely engage with each attendee. Imagine sitting around a table with your nearest and dearest, sharing in a multi-course menu (of food personalised to your taste and style) and swapping moments and memories of the journey your relationship has taken to get to this moment..

Budget-Friendly Celebrations
The smaller guest list means fewer expenses and lower costs for others. You can allocate your budget more efficiently, investing in elements that truly matter to you. For some, this is high-quality food that provides a rich experience rather than what’s most cost-effective for feeding ‘the masses’. Wedding catering is usually a large part of a traditional wedding’s budget due to the amount of people who need to be fed.
Reduced Stress: Simplified Planning
Planning a large wedding can be overwhelming, often leading to a lot of unneeded stress - and who wants that leading up to the big day? Micro weddings have a more manageable planning process. That way you can focus on the joy of your upcoming day rather than getting bogged down by intricate details.
Why micro weddings are perfect for creating connections through food
Historically in New Zealand food, or kai, is an important part of bringing people together during a celebration. So finding a wedding caterer is often top of the list when planning a wedding.
Many people like to choose the main event, for example, lobster or venison - something they may not be able to find at the local restaurants - we have great connections to source products such as caviar, french cheese, truffles or even make them there childhood favorite like a jam roly poly. It’s all about a shared experience with food that inspires and delights.
Real-Life Inspiration

Ainsley and Gavin's Micro Wedding 11th November 23, held in the beautiful Kauri Hill Estate in Totara North, is as the smallest wedding we have done. It was for the bride and groom and their 2 children - simply beautiful!
They asked us for a grazing board while Ainsley was getting makeup and dressed, then we came back that evening for a three-course menu customed to their favourite foods. The bride and groom wanted something a little more elegant, while the kids wanted a good old burger and fries!
It was such a special evening for the family - spending time together and treating themselves to exactly what they wanted, including bottles of the finest wines and flowers to cover the room.
So now you know, one of the key advantages of hosting a micro wedding is the opportunity for personalisation and flexibility.
